While We Wait

The girls are tired of me saying, “we need a family picture”. But they are usually so good about just giving in…most of the time.

One more pic before we’re all going in separate directions.

Memorial Day was spent working outside. Jim on the combine and me doing whatever I could. The days without rain have been few and far between. It seems the moisture in our part of the country has been way more than needed since about January. It just changed from snow to rain.

Flooding is still a main concern in the Eastern part of Nebraska. And also in South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. etc. It seems the entire central section of the country has been “under attack” by Mother Nature. Doesn’t she realize she’s messing with the hand that feeds the people?

The Platte River and the Missouri have, once again, reached maximum capacity and are overflowing. There is nowhere for all of this water to go. The ground is saturated and won’t absorb any more. It’s just plain nuts!

When the Platte River flooded in March, it deposited sand where we had never seen it before. Tall sandbars and debris were exposed when the water receded and the view of the river had forever changed…or so I thought. I really didn’t think I would see water over this particular sandbar again. Boy…was I ever wrong.

Towards late afternoon, Jim and I headed over to Jamie and Curt’s house for supper. This was the gathering place for the holiday that’s typically the kick-off to summer and summer-time fun. It certainly hasn’t been very summery recently.

We spent the evening just enjoying our time together…for the last time.

Jim took the best video capturing the activity of the evening.

Not because Jim and I are leaving for harvest. Oh no…far from it! But because Callie would be leaving for Australia on Sunday and Taylor and Colten will be leaving for Lake of the Ozarks. Our final Z Crew gathering required one last picture!

Jethro (aka Ben and nicknamed by Jim) was giving everyone turns of being pushed in the wagon.

As far as when we’ll be leaving for the harvest highways? Good question. And with all of the rain and flooding, what do we have in store once we do start the journey? Another good question. Social media is flooded with pictures and videos of harvest crews headed south. Thank goodness for SM, but this puts me in a form of depression right now. It’s difficult to see so many wheels turning and ours are not. It’s a bittersweet tug – to be on the road or to be able to stick around here with the kids. Dang!

I am, once again, writing for the High Plains Journal All Aboard Wheat Harvest. If you don’t see much activity here, be sure to check on their site and social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). Some days, it gets to be too much to keep up with two blogs. I suppose if I just take the time, I can make it happen. But to be certain to see what the heck we’re up to, you can find my posts by clicking here. And once we get rolling, the Combine Cam will be streamed from the cab of The Beast.

One last thing…

When we return in the fall, we’ll only have a month or two left in waiting for the newest addition to the Z Crew. Yep…Taylor and Colten are expecting and due the end of November. We’re all anxious to welcome the newest member of the Z Crew and hold a teeny, tiny baby once again!

They are pretty excited!
