We were able to get packed up and on the road heading west in fairly decent time (for us). I believe we were pulling through the metropolis of Jordan at 9:30 a.m. (Mountain Time). We arrived in Lewistown right at noon.

Time to Be Movin On

It’s time to tell J Town goodbye for another year. Our stay was a quick one; barely long enough to even feel like we were really here. And, as usual, the girls were just getting re-acquainted with their friends again and now it’s time to hit the road. The ‘ole heart strings are being pulled as it’s hard to tell good friends goodbye for another year!!

Moving Through the Montana Prairie

It showered in J Town early Monday night.

Jim and I headed to the field to get the combine moved back to Charlie’s. We didn’t realize the threatening cloud bank was there until we began heading east out of town. Jim kept looking back over his shoulder until it finally got the best of him. “It’s against my better judgment to go any farther”, he said. We turned around and headed back to town. There was NO WAY either one of us wanted to be on those “cow paths” should it begin to rain…especially since our service truck is the only two wheel drive pickup left in this part of the world.

The Sweet, Sweet Smell of Rain

I thought we were done yesterday because the red combines were sitting in the yard and our strip was finished. So, I was surprised late in the afternoon when I got back from the elevator and saw the combine headed to another mile long strip. I asked Jim what was going on and he said, “They’re being good to us”. Thanks, guys, we certainly appreciate it! The best part of this job is working for some of the best people in the world! I truly am going to miss them.

Cutting Wheat in the Desert

We were back in the field today before 10:00 a.m. I know we could have been there earlier but we had to get the equipment serviced and moved to the first field which takes time. The  fields we cut here are in mile long strips. I like cutting these because there’s very little turning and it feels like you get a lot accomplished in a short period of time. Each field is approximately 100 acres  – we were able to get two of them cut today. Unfortunately, the yields aren’t as good as we’ve been cutting this summer. Jim thought we’d be lucky if we cut 20 bushel wheat here.

YES! We were able to get started cutting wheat on Monday. As you can see from the temperature in  Lakin on that day, it was plenty warm. Today (Tuesday) was hot (101), as well, and HORRIBLY windy!

“Pure Pleasure”

Yesterday seems like a week ago and I’m even struggling to remember what we did other than cut wheat.

We finished the smaller of the two fields near Arnett yesterday and moved to the larger one. This field appeared to be a piece of cake. However, it’s yielding 60+ bushels per acre and the straw causes a little bit of an issue at times. So, it feels like I’m creeping when travelling at 3.2 mph. I remember when that speed was tops! The field is relatively flat – no terraces like the rest of them have had. And, the best part, it’s across the road from the elevator.

“Something’s going on with the sun!”

We finished the job(s) we have been working on since late Monday afternoon. And, it was pretty much nonstop once we got rolling on Monday (today is Sunday).  Believe me; I am ready for a break – even if that’s just a moving-day break!

The job we started yesterday ended early this evening – just as a storm wanted to move towards the field. The farmer asked us if we would cut a little more but Jim didn’t want to get caught starting a field, it starting to rain and we really need to get moved to job #2. So, we played a little less risk and decided to call the job complete.  Burkburnett, Texas…it was fun but it’s time to move on.
