#1 Post for 2012…”We cut wheat today!” (video)

The day I wrote this post was one that had been long awaited!  We cut wheat today  on May 16 after sitting for days of waiting for moisture levels to get low enough to cut. The perfect moisture to cut wheat is 13%.  We sort of figured out it was probably due to the early spring and already ripened wheat. The wheat was ready to cut but the dew and cooler temps in the mornings (like a typical spring in TX) were messing with our ability to get it cut. It was after 3:00 when we FINALLY got started. Reading this post and seeing the pictures makes me really excited about heading south again.

An Endangered Species?

For some “down” time, I sometimes like to hit the “Random Post” link on my blog. It’s always fun to see what we were doing on that particular random day.  If someone is with me, I like to reread the posting to them to spark a memory of where we were and what we were doing. HHD and The Dirt Blizzard

The flags can attest to the strong winds as we entered. As it was, this was calm compared to what we endured later in the day.

The plan on Friday was for Jim and The Yellow Beast to get back to picking corn AFTER the trip to Husker Harvest Days on Wednesday. That plan was spoiled by the hot temps that made their way back into the region. It was 96 degrees on Tuesday. I tried to justify to him why it would be ok for his taking Wednesday off to make the  trip to Grand Island. “It’s still so early in the fall”. “What? Is it going to start raining now?” “It’s not like the weather’s going to drastically change”. However, because of his strong work ethic all my attempts were met with a strong NO!  I wanted to go. Mark, Candi and Jenna were still planning on the trip, so I decided what the heck?! (One more day to pretend like I have nothing better to do.)

THE FINAL DAY

Zeorian Harvesting finished the last acre of the 2012 wheat harvest last night. After a high-five and a “good job”, Jim and I looked at each other and smiled. Another year complete!

The past 110 days have revolved completely around wheat and being on the road. Today, the harvest letdown will creep in and continue to eat at me until everything is back home and real life begins again. It’ll be SO GOOD to be reunited with the kids but I’m not looking forward to being home. Home, right now, means routine, schedule, alarm clocks and the work of getting back to normal. The work of stepping back into the real world will involve chasing spiders and bugs from our house, unloading the cottage, deep cleaning the cottage (inside & out), and pulling a horrible amount of weeds. Ugh! Plus being thrown right back into the needs of school, church and any outside pulls.

We got back in the field late Tuesday morning. I was definitely in some sort of funk all day due to missing the girls and the mountains. By the end of the day, though, things sort of started falling back into place.

Until you begin the next good book

The very first thing I need to do is tell my Dad Happy Birthday! I love you and hope you did something special for yourself today. I remember one birthday, in particular, we celebrated in Great Falls. I believe that was in 1983. I remember we sat there for what seemed like forever before we finally got just a few more acres to cut before having to head home. I know Pohney used to make you a special German chocolate cake and I can remember Tom “Thumb” always making a point to tell me to tell you Happy Birthday. Good memories!

Remnants of Harvest Past

I am so tired today! I really think I could sleep just about anywhere-maybe even standing up (I know someone who did that in the shower). We put in a huge day yesterday. Jim told me last night on the way back to the cottage he cut 120 acres. Doesn’t sound like much if you have more than one combine. With Ed’s combine cutting the same acres, 240 sounds better. Considering it’s 70+ bushel wheat (weighing 60 lbs and 11% protein) and only two tandem trucks to haul it away, I think we did good! Poor Frank didn’t get much of a break all day. And neither did I. A Little Too Camera Happy

 

We had a day off on Friday but we got right back to work on Saturday. Back to the early mornings and late nights due to the 80 mile round trip drive to the field. We had a bit of bad luck last night as we were driving home. Jim hit a fairly large buck – but as luck had it – the service pickup suffered minimal damage. I really think our vehicles are deer magnets!

All In a Day’s Work

The wheat is yielding VERY well. Jim said he was seeing 70 – 100 bushels per acre pretty consistently all day. For brief seconds at a time, he was even seeing 180 on his monitor.
