Father’s Day & Rain

Happy Father’s Day!!

What did the Z Crew do to celebrate? NOTHING! This just about drove Taylor and Callie completely bonkers. I, however, LOVED it. I needed this day to get caught up on book work and get a few things better organized.

It rained early this morning. There’s nothing better than rain on the roof of the trailer house. I know it’s early in the season and we’re already behind on acres but I needed a good down day. A day that meant nothing more would get done than what I allowed. It started at 9:30 am. Yep…I slept til then and it felt great! I’m not going to apologize for one second of it.

Taylor and Callie had decided last night they wanted to make Jim a special supper involving a roast. I coached them through their idea before heading to bed. We had no idea it was going to rain and they were planning to bring it to the field. They followed through with the meal made in the crock pot even after they knew we probably wouldn’t cut. The roast was sprinkled with seasonings and surrounded by chunks of onion, baby potatoes, carrots and topped with fresh green beans. Turn on high and let simmer all day (for about 7 hrs).

They wanted to make strawberry shortcake for dessert. I talked Taylor into making a pound cake (Betty Crocker box) rather than buy those little cakes. I suggested adding almond flavoring to the batter. Good decision!

It was overcast all day. We had a few more sprinkles of rain throughout the day. Needless to say, we did not cut wheat. The forecast shows possibility of rain for the next several days. Of course it does, it’s time to cut wheat. It’s hard to get too upset about rain for this chunk of the world though!

We’ll have to see what tomorrow brings but as for what we had today – it was a great Father’s Day – it meant a day of rest.

Taylor stretching out on the floor while checking out the ringtones on her phone. Yes…she was that bored!

Clouds to the north of us as we were heading back to Shattuck after finishing field #2.

We started and finished the field we had to move to south of Arnett yesterday. We figured it made 16 bushels/acre, only weighed 56 lbs. and held moisture at 13.5%. We were lucky to be working with a pretty darn good elevator manager! We had to call him prior to heading in with our two truckloads of wheat. He met us at the elevator both times to dump my truck. The second time he met me, he had been home to shower and change clothes to attend a dance they were having in the park. Now that was way above and beyond the call of duty! Apparently, we were the only ones bringing in wheat around here. THANK YOU, Todd, for being so good to the dang combiner’s!
